Living in Shaler

Shaler Township has a rich history and played a major role in the railway industry serving the growing City of Pittsburgh.  We are proud of our historic homes and hard working residents who contributed to the success of the area's development. With the transformation of the Allegheny County region in the technology and medical fields, we continue to offer many opportunities for our residents who contribute to these growing fields of knowledge by offering affordable housing and a variety of recreational activities.

Shaler Township is primarily a bedroom community located in close proximity to the City of Pittsburgh. Residents can enjoy various business establishments (listed in our business directory) as well as access major shopping malls in neighboring communities. Our proximity to the City of Pittsburgh, its museums, sporting venues and other services is just six miles away.

The Township is served by the Shaler Area School District, with four primary schools (grades K-3), one elementary school (grades 4-6), one middle school (grades 7-8), and high school (grades 9-12) all located within Shaler Township. And Pittsburgh's great universities including the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon, Duquesne, Point Park, Carlow and more, are just a short drive away.

Shaler Township is chartered as a First Class Township under Pennsylvania law.  It is governed by a seven-member Board of Commissioners which sets policy.  This policy is administered by an appointed Manager who oversees the Township staff of more than 62 full-time employees.

The Township proudly maintains over 105 miles of Township owned streets as well as over 80 miles of sanitary sewer line. Water service is provided by the Hampton Shaler Water Authority and refuse service is contracted independently between the resident and County Hauling.

Shaler Township is a 10.5 square mile area with a total population under 30,000.  Demographics from the 2020 Census are available here.
