The Township of Shaler has partnered with the Southwestern Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Red Cross to form a Community Shelter Team. The purpose of the Community Shelter Team is to provide assistance to the Red Cross in the event of a disaster in or around our community. The shelter team will assist in opening and running an emergency shelter for any residents who are displaced by an event such as a flood, major power outage, fire, etc.
The team is made up of community volunteers who are not already members of any of our Emergency Services Agencies such as Police, Fire, EMS, or Emergency Management. A core group of volunteers has gone through an initial training program of 9 hours of instruction, conducted by the local Red Cross chapter.
On Saturday December 5, 2009 there was a second training session held and the group has added eight more members. The Shaler Community Shelter Team received their Shelter Trailer and equipment. The Team is now active and ready to respond if needed.
