Please enjoy the photo slide show of Community Day held at Kiwanis Park on July 4th. It was a beautiful day starting with the Jane Neely Race at 8:30 in the morning, swimming at Crawford Pool all afternoon, fire truck rides given by Elfinwild, Shaler Villa and Undercliff Volunteer Fire Departments, food vendors, vendors in the tents, children's tattoos and inflatables,Tobacco Road and Uptown Rhythm & Brass Band and the fireworks display by Pyrotecnico.
We give a special thanks to Jeff Critchlow Auto Body and Car Care Center for sponsoring the band and sound system.
Community Day is an annual celebration held on the 4th of July at Kiwanis Park for the friends and neighbors of Shaler Township. It has been a community staple for more than 40 years.
What began as a gathering on the 4th of July at Kiwanis Park to enjoy fireworks has turned into a time to celebrate the community at large with family and friends.
It has expanded over the years to include food vendors, children’s activities, a community tent with business and organization booths, a D.J., fire truck rides and the Jane Neely 5K race. Crawford Pool is also open 12:00 Noon to 5:00 PM during Community Day.
The Jane Neely 5K began more than 10 years ago as a tribute to Jane. Jane Neely was diagnosed with postpastrum cardiomyopathy after the birth of her second son in 1985. She received a heart transplant in 1988 and began work as an ambassador for donation for the Center for Organ Recover and Education.
Neely passed away in June 2005 due to complications from her second heart transplant in April of that year. Proceeds from the race its first year went to benefit the Center for Organ Recovery and Education. In recent years, the proceeds have benefited various community groups, most recently raising more than $2,000 for the Shaler Area Backpack Initiative.
